The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense which was set up through direct papal intervention on 12th November 1592. However, it was formally established in 1769 by papal decree through the Knights of St John. It has since grown steadily to become the foremost education and research institution of the country. Through its Faculty of Engineering, it now provides tertiary level tuition and supervision to about 300 students annually, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels while conducting research in various fields covered by its six departments. As of 2017, the University employs 1590 staff across academic, administrative and technical roles (excluding Junior College).

New Energy Ltd. was established over 20 years ago and has been manufacturing batteries and accessories for portable electronics ever since. New Energy Ltd. products are used world-wide. New Energy Ltd. initially started producing removable batteries for mobile phones, and then progressed through the use of Li-Ion technology to design and produce OEM battery packs for a number of applications including, personal mobility and portable handheld devices. One of the product families in its portfolio is the Blueshape brand of products. New Energy Ltd. employs over 15 persons.
