At the R&I Expo 2025, our Go-To-Market project GLACIER took first place in the Outstanding Technological Innovation award category.
The 2025 R&I Expo took place on November 19 and 20. Organised by Xjenza Malta, the event brought together Malta’s brightest researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders. This year showcased over 35 projects funded through various national schemes, ranging from the blue economy to space exploration, highlighting the diversity of Malta’s local research.
Judges evaluated entries based on technological innovation, market readiness, and potential impact. GLACIER was selected for its pragmatic yet innovative approach to thermal management challenges.
Andre Micallef led the project as Principal Investigator. Thomas Galea served as lead RSO and is now CEO of ICECAP Systems Ltd. Gareth Blundell, Alec Fenech, and Daniel Attard completed the core team. Together, they transformed laboratory results into reliable hardware. Their innovations included multi-stage module designs and guard-ring techniques, and application-aware control built on the Aristat Controller platform.
GLACIER is our commercialisation track within Xjenza Malta’s Go To Market Accelerator Programme. The programme supports the final steps to market, such as customer trials, certification, supply-chain readiness, and investor engagement, so promising R&I projects become products.
This award highlights the progression of ICECAP Systems from an academic research project at the University of Malta to a commercial entity.
The company acknowledges the support of Xjenza Malta, the University of Malta, and its partners in reaching this stage.
ICECAP Systems continues to focus on the development and deployment of new technologies for the thermal management market.
